Highlights:
-
- Gale Warning, Freezing Spray Warning for Lake St. Clair, Lake Huron
- Increased wave action, storm surge, possible shoreline erosion
- Elevated water levels, potential for shoreline flooding
A low pressure system moving into Ontario is forecast to bring strong winds to the region tomorrow. Beginning early Friday morning, winds over Lake St. Clair are predicted to be westerly with gusts near 60 km/h, turning southwesterly and increasing in speed through the day into Friday night where gusts could reach over 100 km/h with sustained winds near 70 km/h. Winds are forecast to remain strong through Saturday, subsiding Sunday.
Waves on Lake St. Clair are anticipated to build upwards of 2 metres near noon Friday. Despite recent drops in water levels, storm surge associated with this event could quickly elevate water levels, with the potential for minor flooding near the shoreline and in natural floodplain areas. Shoreline erosion is possible with continued wave action.
Residents along the Lake St. Clair shoreline near Mitchell’s Bay and Walpole Island First Nation should pay close attention to local conditions. Water levels in the Sydenham River at Wallaceburg may also become elevated due to backflow from strong winds.
Strong winds over Lake Huron are also anticipated to bring storm surge, increased wave action and freezing spray. Waves are anticipated to be around 3 to 6 metres during this event, peaking late Friday/early Saturday. Water levels may be elevated and shoreline erosion is possible with continued wave action.
Individuals are reminded to avoid the shoreline and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions, slippery banks and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.
The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise.
Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.
