Seedlings and large stock trees are available for purchase for landowners that wish to plant their own trees. “Our tree planting program is very important to our region,” Steve Shaw, Manager of Conservation Services said. “In this region, we only average 11% total forest cover. We need to continue to plant trees, particularly on land vulnerable to erosion to protect our soil and water resources.”
Trees are important because they:
- clean the air by filtering out pollutants
- help to hold soil in place, reducing erosion
- take carbon out of the atmosphere, counteracting the effect of green house gases
- act like a sponge and help regulate streams, decreasing peak flows and maintaining low flows
- beautify the landscape
- increase property value
- provide habitat for wildlife
- help improve the environment for future generations
