Highlights:
- 5 – 10 mm of rain anticipated today and tomorrow
- Southwesterly winds through to Saturday evening
- Elevated water levels across the watershed
- Sustained high water levels in Wallaceburg
High water levels on Lake Huron, St. Clair River and Lake St. Clair have slowed the movement of water out of the Sydenham River, and as a result have created conditions where water levels in Wallaceburg remain high.
A convective system is anticipated to bring 5 to 10 mm of rain this afternoon and evening with a further anticipated 5 to 10 mm tomorrow. This amount of rain may exacerbate already high water levels and result in minor flooding into natural floodplain areas, agricultural fields and parks. Winds from a southerly or westerly direction can further slow the movement of water out of the Sydenham River and contribute to flooding in the Wallaceburg region.
Soils already saturated by prolonged high water levels could see possible increased erosion and seepage issues. High amounts of rainfall in a short period of time can lead to increased runoff and flash flooding, particularly in urban areas.
River banks are expected to be slippery, with possible minor erosion. Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to slippery banks and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.
The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise.
Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.
