The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has provided $300,000 to protect the St. Clair River shoreline at the Lambton Area Water Supply System (LAWSS) in the City of Sarnia. The funds were provided to the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority through the Water and Erosion Control Infrastructure (WECI) program. Matching funds will be provided by LAWSS to complete this work.
The protection will be a combination of new stepped armour stone, similar to the protection at the Point Edward Waterfront Park and the reinstallation of some of the existing concrete blocks. “With proper installation, recycling some of the concrete blocks will make the project much more cost effective,” Girish Sankar, Water Resources Engineer for the Conservation Authority said.
“This is important work,” Susan MacFarlane, General Manager of LAWSS said. “We need to ensure safety and the long-term sustainability of the LAWSS facilities and this erosion protection is a key part of that plan.”
Construction is expected to begin early in the new year and be completed by the end of March 2015.
